A Bit of Chocolate Can Change the World

Seeds Bookstore, located at Willow Creek Community Church, offers more than a great selection of books, CDs, Bibles, and greeting cards. It offers hope—in the form of transactions between your average shopper and someone struggling against poverty clear across the globe. Seeds sells Fair Trade products.

The Fair Trade Certified label on a product means it was produced under fair labor conditions, using environmentally sustainable methods, and bringing a fair price to the artisans or farmers who created it—people struggling provide enough food, water, and medical care for their families. Chocolate, coffee, jewelry, and household items are just some of the products offered in Seeds. When you make a Fair Trade purchase, the hands that worked to bring your purchase to market receive a dignified living wage for their efforts. And you receive a double blessing—getting a quality product, and knowing your purchase makes a difference in the world.

Who knew a bit of chocolate could do this much good?

Seeds Goes Green

Seeds, Willow Creek's bookstore, recently launched a section of used books and music.

The original inventory, mostly donations from Seeds volunteers and the Willow Creek staff, has moved quickly. According to Sue Carter, who oversees the inventory, more than 500 items have been sold in just over six weeks.

Although “used,” the items are in excellent condition. Merchandise is carefully examined, then priced—at $2, $3, $5, and $8. There are beautiful Bibles available that are in nearly perfect condition. Sue reports that the $2 and $3 items have moved the fastest. Used items offered for sale must meet the same standards, established by the Elders, as the regular inventory.

Seeds is seeking new donations. Willow Creek attenders are asked to check their bookshelves and music libraries for any items they’d like to pass on. Donations may be dropped off at the store; tax exemption  letters are available. And for those looking for a place to serve, Seeds has a variety of volunteer opportunities.

Seeds is a self-supporting ministry and also contributes to the maintenance of the Food Pantry.
