Willow Creek Invests Sweat Equity

(0)

Twenty teenagers and 20 adults from Willow Creek Community Church earned plenty of sweat equity in Waveland, Mississippi during Blitz Build 2010, from June 19-26. Volunteers painted walls, did minor and major construction projects, and helped distribute food and Bibles in local neighborhoods still reeling from the effects of Katrina. These volunteers utilized their existing skills and honed new ones as they built structures—and community—in the sweltering Mississippi heat. Hundreds of additional volunteers served in projects located closer to home, such as Allendale (Round Lake Beach), Riverwoods (St. Charles), and Habitat for Humanity (Carpentersville).

Willow Creek Community Church partners with Habitat for Humanity in Blitz Build, remodeling, revitalizing, and building homes and schools from scratch. Over the past several years, Willow Creek has sent hundreds of volunteers to local, national, and even international locations to build schools and restore buildings wiped out by Hurricane Katrina, and expand camp facilities.

In 2010, Blitz Build takes place between June 19-26.

Blitzbuild061010 “We have seen exotic birds and plants in Hawaii, castles in Spain and the crowned jewels in London, but nothing compares to doing God’s work in community with others,”  said a Blitz Build volunteer. Blitz Build is a week of high-intensity construction work to help the under-resourced. It begins by choosing a job, starting a conversation with the person next to you, and sharing moments of laughter and spiritual reflection.  Carving out a week or even just a day or two, can make a big difference in the lives of others and in your own physical and spiritual development. It’s the meat of the gospel in action.

Volunteers who participate in a Blitz Build:

· Help someone who is in need. Pick up a paint brush and make the world a prettier place for a young child who has experienced terrible abuse.

·    Develop friendships. “I went all the way to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi to serve in a Blitz Build and became friends with people who live less than 10 miles from my home,” said a volunteer. “When we see one another at church or at other serves, there is an immediate connection because those who sweat together, connect together.  Since we were made for community, this is like a Willow Creek Amish barn-building experience.”

· Learn a new skill. You’ll come home and see all kinds of things to do around your own house, but now you’ll have acquired some skills so you may be able to do it yourself.

· Teach others what you have learned. Just like the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30, God has given each one of us talents He expects us to share with others.  Here is a place to multiply your talents for the kingdom.

· Develop compassion and gratitude. The experience will help you understand the plight of the under-resourced.  Remember what Willow has taught: God’s answer to poverty is us.  Let the world see the body of Christ in action.

· Adventure. Change the daily wallpaper in your life and break up your routine.
