DadFest 2010: What Dad Really Wants for Father’s Day

(0)

Father’s Day weekend is like no other at Willow Creek Community Church: DadFest—Willow Creek’s annual celebration of all things father—is a conglomeration of men-focused teaching, family friendly fun, cool cars, live rock ‘n roll and free food.

Willow Creek’s weekend services kicked off with a dad-targeted message from Super Bowl champ Mike Singletary, former linebacker with the Chicago Bears and current head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Mike, as the father of seven, considers his role as a dad to be his most significant role. After services, dads and their families were invited outdoors to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the sixth annual DadFest car show, featuring exotic and classic cars, custom motorcycles, cigarette boats, motor homes and campers, tricked-out trucks, and more—including an indescribable Pontiac GTO, which is not to be missed, and two cars from James Bond movies (a '69 Mercury Cougar from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and a custom-built Jaguar XKR from "Die Another Day"). Trophies were presented to the winners of each class of vehicle participating in the judged show.

DadFest also featured free hot dogs, popcorn, and ice cream—a perfect Father's Day feast—as well as live 50s and 60s music from The Ambassadors (Saturday) and Denny Diamond (Sunday). Also on Saturday, world champion Elvis impersonator Shawn Klush made an appearance. Get a glimpse of Shawn in action.

DadFest is sponsored by Willow Creek’s C.A.R.S. Ministry, a team of dedicated staff and volunteers who recondition cars to give to single moms and others who have real transportation needs. Last year, C.A.R.S. gave away 95 vehicles and provided more than 200 benevolent car repairs. “If you have a vehicle to donate, or are interested in volunteering your mechanical skills to help repair cars, get in touch with us,” says C.A.R.S. Ministry directory Warren Young.

Calling All Cars (RVs, Motorcycles, and Vehicles)

As Father’s Day approaches at Willow Creek Community Church, the CARS ministry is gearing up for DadFest. Since its inception, DadFest has attracted unique vehicles from classic cars, to hogs, to helicopters onto the South Barrington campus to honor Dads with a car show, live music from the 60s and 70s, and free hot dogs. It’s the best block party in town.

Filling parking lots the equivalent of two football fields with vehicles, Willow Creek invites dads to enjoy a car show with their families following weekend services on June 19/20. And DadFest is a great place to display a favorite vehicle of any kind.  It’s all free and prizes will be awarded.

If you or someone you know has a vehicle you’d like to display at DadFest, contact John at jgingerich@willowcreek.org. DadFest is sponsored by the CARS Ministry of Willow Creek and is a ministry that takes in cars and reconditions them for those who are unable to meet their own transportation needs.
